As soon as I begin reading, images begin to take shape in my mind. The characters’ face, how tall they are, how old they are, how they act, what their world looks like, is taken from every written word, used to create something visual.

I was once so obsessed getting the envisaged likenesses of Morgaine and Arthur in The Road to Avalon (by Joan Wolf) correct, that I broke through the paper due to my pencil pressure and multiple erasures. That is to say, I am passionate as an artist, even more so as a reader and even then, for stories that carry strange machinations and eccentric characters. Call them children’s fiction if you want, I read them all the time. I am happy to carry around my favorite from Kate DiCamillo, The Hotel Balzaar and The Puppets of Spelhorst, as well as my copy of Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth or The Faun and the Woodcutter’s Daughter by Barbara Leonie Picard. I endlessly adore stories and the imagery they inspire.

A good Caran D’ache colored pencil is among my favorite tools, particularly a red one for sketching. Watercolors too, remain central to my work and a pastel flourish is a favoured way to create dreamy images. If needed, I also use Clip Studio Paint to further finish my illustrations. My work combines delicate linework with richly detailed settings to tell whimsical, character-driven stories—often featuring animals, surreal worlds, and touches of fantasy. A wayward bluebird or menacing crow can do wonders, if it serves the story.

I believe stories shape how we see the world—and I hope my illustrative work help kids feel seen, safe, adventurous, inspired, silly and a little more brave. Hopefully, it helps their adults too.

I am influenced by illustrators like Iris Compiet, Olga Dugina, Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Claire Wendling, Allan Ahlberg, Jules Feiffer and Chris Riddell, among others. I aspire to always learn, to continue to develop my skills and composition to tell better stories with my work.

I am genuinely curious about people’s stories. My vision is to help them see those stories come to life.
